NFL news: Hall of Famer Warren Moon shares tips with Browns’ Shedeur Sanders

Recently, Shedeur Sanders’ unexpected drop in the NFL draft has sparked considerable discussion in the sports community. Initially touted as a potential first-round pick, he ultimately went later than anticipated. On the final day of the draft, after being selected by the Cleveland Browns, Sanders posted a brief yet heartfelt message on social media: “Thank God.”

As speculation swirled regarding his draft decline, many have weighed in on his situation. Among them, Warren Moon, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, shared his thoughts during a visit to Churchill Downs before the Kentucky Derby.

Moon, who has an impressive record of nine Pro Bowl selections, offered guidance to Sanders as he embarks on his NFL journey with the Browns. He emphasized the importance of humility for a quarterback, saying, “You can’t act like a cornerback. Quarterbacks are humble and you have to be respectful.” He added that with the position comes significant responsibility: “You have to be a leader. You’re the face of the franchise. There’s a lot of responsibility that comes with it.”

Reflecting on his pre-draft experience, Sanders described a particular interview with an anonymous NFL assistant coach as the “worst formal interview” he had encountered. This didn’t help his reputation among scouts who had their reservations about his abilities. One evaluation criticized him for issues like poor timing and negative body language, indicating that he didn’t play to his potential.

Despite the mixed reviews before the draft, Moon remains optimistic about Sanders’ prospects now that he has the chance to start anew in the NFL. “You might have felt wronged during the pre-draft process, but now you’re drafted,” Moon said. “You’re in an organization. You have the opportunity to go there and make a name for yourself.”

During the 2024 season at Colorado, Sanders totaled 4,134 passing yards. Now, he joins a crowded quarterback lineup in Cleveland that includes Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel.
