NFL news: Quinn Ewers’ agent criticizes league for quarterback’s draft fall

Quinn Ewers had a shot at the NFL instead of focusing on his college football career with the Texas Longhorns.

His draft projections shifted dramatically, dropping to the final round. Eventually, the Miami Dolphins selected him in the seventh round, which means he’ll likely be vying with Zach Wilson for the backup quarterback position.

The former Texas standout and his agent, Ron Slavin, have voiced their thoughts about the unexpected drop in Ewers’ draft stock. Slavin mentioned that as the draft progressed, he anticipated Ewers might go on the second day, possibly with teams like the Raiders or Seahawks.

Before the seventh round commenced, Slavin communicated with both the Dolphins and the Cowboys, and it was Miami that finally picked Ewers. He reached out to “half of the league,” puzzled as to why his client slipped from a fourth-round projection to seventh.

“They figured he’d be a third or fourth pick, but his name was considered too big to just hold a clipboard,” he remarked. “I think this is a chicken…”

Ewers noted that he plans to channel this draft experience as motivation. “It certainly adds a lot of fuel, especially considering it was the last (quarterback) draft,” he commented. “I still maintain high expectations for myself, but it’s the first time I’ve felt I didn’t have that much attention on me. There’s definitely a lot of motivation there.”

Ewers was a highly-rated quarterback coming out of high school, first committing to Ohio State before transferring to Texas ahead of the 2022 season, where he completed his college career.

In 2024, he threw for 3,472 yards and 31 touchdown passes. The Longhorns made it to the college football playoffs, only to be knocked out by Ohio State in the semi-finals.
