NFL playoff scenario: How the Bears-Browns game impacts NFC standings

Chicago Bears Prepare for Crucial Game Against Cleveland Browns

The Chicago Bears aim to strengthen their playoff hopes as they take on the Cleveland Browns in Week 15. Last week, the Bears had a shot at a comeback but fell to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. This loss marked the end of their five-game winning streak, bringing their record to 9 wins and 4 losses.

They’ll be facing a Browns team that’s currently on a two-game losing streak, having just suffered a tough defeat at home against the struggling Titans, which dropped Cleveland to a disappointing 3-10. Schedule Sanders did show some promise last week, but, it seems, the Browns are now more focused on shaping their draft strategy as the season winds down.

Chicago enters this matchup as a 7.5-point favorite.

Chicago Bears Playoff Outlook

The Bears still have an opportunity to claim the NFC North title, although they find themselves half a game behind the Packers. On a brighter note, Chicago has a home game against Green Bay lined up for next week, while the Packers travel to face Denver this week—a challenging hurdle for them. Green Bay is currently favored by 2.5 points. Should the Bears win against the Browns and the Packers lose, the stage would be set for a decisive Week 16 matchup, allowing Chicago a chance to gain control of the division. According to a playoff simulator, they have a 22% chance of winning the division and hosting a wild card team in the first round. Winning against the Browns could boost that to 25%, but a loss would drop that probability to 12%.

The Bears find themselves tied with the 49ers in the wild-card standings, though San Francisco holds the edge due to better conference records. Interestingly, the two teams are slated to clash in Week 17, which may significantly influence playoff positions. If the Bears win and the Packers falter on Sunday, Chicago could move up to the No. 2 seed. The playoff simulator gives the Bears a 44% chance of snagging a wild card spot and a 4% chance of clinching the top seed. Should they best the Browns, those figures might rise to 46% and 6%, respectively, but a loss would see them drop to 41%—well below 1%.

It’s unlikely that this match will play a major role in any tiebreak scenarios. The Browns are a common opponent with the Packers, which could simplify things; tied records would probably mean they won’t be in a bind against Chicago. They do share common ground with the 49ers, but if there’s no tie, the head-to-head meeting in Week 17 will serve as the tiebreaker.
