Week 14’s Exciting NFL Action
Week 14 turned out to be an eventful December in the NFL, with a series of games that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
Three important matchups were up for grabs: the Indianapolis Colts faced the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Pittsburgh Steelers clashed with the Baltimore Ravens, and the Chicago Bears went head-to-head with the Green Bay Packers. It was a monumental week, highlighted by Thursday night’s game between the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys, which holds significant implications for the playoff standings. Plus, many crucial games took place across the league.
As we transition to Monday night football, the stakes are this: the AFC playoff picture looks like this:
1. Denver Broncos (11-2)
2. New England Patriots (11-2)
3. Jacksonville Jaguars (9-4)
4. Pittsburgh Steelers (7-6)
5. Buffalo Bills (9-4)
6. Los Angeles Chargers (8-4)
7. Houston Texans (8-5)
8. Indianapolis Colts (8-5)
9. Baltimore Ravens (6-7)
10. Kansas City Chiefs (6-7)
11. Miami Dolphins (6-7)
12. Cincinnati Bengals (4-9)
13. New York Jets (3-10) – eliminated
14. Cleveland Browns (3-10) – eliminated
15. Las Vegas Raiders (2-10) – eliminated
16. Tennessee Titans (2-11) – eliminated
The Browns and Jets find themselves at the bottom of the standings, having lost their chances for playoff contention.
Now, at the top of the AFC, the Denver Broncos reclaimed first place in the conference with a victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Holding a 7-2 record within the conference, they have an edge in tiebreakers over the New England Patriots, who have a 6-2 record.
Importantly for Denver, securing this win against Las Vegas also gives them the tiebreaker advantage over the Patriots. The Raiders are considered a common opponent for both teams, with Denver boasting a 6-0 record against such teams, while the Patriots lost one match.
This means that if both Denver and New England win their upcoming games, the Broncos will have the tiebreaker advantage due to the Patriots’ earlier loss to the Raiders.
In another crucial match, Jacksonville took down the Colts, putting them in sole possession of first place in the AFC South. Meanwhile, the Steelers moved to the top of the AFC North, pushing the Ravens to fourth place, leaving Baltimore temporarily out of the playoff picture.
The Buffalo Bills currently sit as the fifth seed after securing a recent win, while the Chargers have taken a step up in their standings, shifting Buffalo down.
Thanks to their win on Sunday night, the Houston Texans now find themselves in playoff contention alongside the Colts, both teams holding an 8-5 record. However, Houston’s victory over Indianapolis gives them the advantage for now.
As for the Kansas City Chiefs, they are now among three teams with a 6-7 record, alongside the Ravens and Dolphins. Baltimore is slightly ahead due to a 4-5 conference record, while Kansas City has a 3-5 record, and Miami comes in at 3-6. With Kansas City out of the AFC West race as of last night, they sit in 10th place, and Miami holds 11th.
If the playoffs were to start today, the wild card matchups would look like this:
- 7th place Houston vs. 2nd place New England
- 6th place Los Angeles vs. 3rd place Jacksonville
- 5th place Buffalo vs. 4th place Pittsburgh
Now, let’s examine the NFC standings:
1. Los Angeles Rams (10-3)
2. Green Bay Packers (9-3-1)
3. Philadelphia Eagles (8-4)
4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-6)
5. Seattle Seahawks (10-3)
6. San Francisco 49ers (9-4)
7. Chicago Bears (9-4)
8. Detroit Lions (8-5)
9. Carolina Panthers (7-6)
10. Dallas Cowboys (6-6-1)
11. Minnesota Vikings (5-8)
12. Atlanta Falcons (4-9) – eliminated
13. Arizona Cardinals (3-10) – eliminated
14. New Orleans Saints (3-10) – eliminated
15. Washington Commanders (3-10) – eliminated
16. New York Giants (2-11) – eliminated
So, how significant was this week for the NFL?
The Chicago Bears entered the week at the top of the NFC but dropped to seventh place after their loss to the Packers.
The Los Angeles Rams managed to secure first place in the NFC once again after defeating the Arizona Cardinals. They share a record with the Seattle Seahawks, yet they maintain the tiebreaker advantage from their recent victory against Seattle.
Even with the Buccaneers losing to the Saints, the NFC South remains intense, as they currently stand tied with the Panthers at 7-6 in the division. However, Tampa Bay still holds first place due to better overall records: Tampa is 5-4 in common matchups, while Carolina comes in at 4-5. The pivotal factor here has been Carolina’s losses to the 49ers and Cardinals.
If the playoffs began today, the Detroit Lions would unfortunately be out of the running.
Of note, two teams in the NFC, the Commanders and Falcons, have officially been eliminated from playoff contention.
If playoffs were to commence today, these would be the wild card matchups:
- 7th Chicago vs. 2nd Green Bay
- 6th San Francisco vs. 3rd Philadelphia
- 5th Seattle vs. 4th Tampa Bay
What’s on the Line in Eagles vs. Chargers?
This game features contenders from both the AFC and NFC, so the stakes are indeed high for the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Chargers.
A win for the Eagles would mean they reach 9-4, putting them just half a game back from the Packers with whom they’ve already secured a win this season. Conversely, a loss would send Philadelphia to 8-5, which still keeps them in third place but only a game away from the rising contenders in the NFC South.
For the Chargers, a victory against Philadelphia would elevate them to fifth place, dropping the Bills to sixth.
If they were to lose to the Eagles, however, the Chargers would find themselves at risk of elimination. They would then be tied with the Texans and Colts, and depending on the tiebreaker, Houston could leap to sixth place while the Colts fight back into the playoff frame at seventh.
