49ers Eyeing Cornerback Joey Porter Jr.

The San Francisco 49ers have only played one game in the current season, yet they’re reportedly already exploring ways to strengthen their secondary.

ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler mentioned that the 49ers are considered a potential landing spot for cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers, as tensions surrounding his contract have reached a “tipping point.”

Porter Jr., drafted as the last pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has been embroiled in a contract dispute with the Steelers for about a year. This situation might lead him to a new team.

Having grown up mostly in the Pittsburgh area—after playing college football at Penn State and being the son of former Steelers linebacker Joey Porter, who played there for seven seasons—Porter Jr. seems poised for a significant change.

Fowler suggested that the 49ers might be an appealing option for the rookie cornerback because they have eight picks in the upcoming draft and approximately $45 million available, which would likely facilitate a contract extension.

Moreover, pairing Porter Jr. with current 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir could create a formidable duo, enhancing the team’s defensive strategy.

Porter Jr. has showcased his skills as one of the NFL’s top cornerbacks specializing in press-man coverage—a performance highlighted by his impressive stats, where receivers connected on just 32 of the 66 passes thrown in his direction.

Last season, the 49ers’ defense struggled particularly in the secondary, as they barely avoided landing among the bottom five teams in passing touchdowns allowed, giving up 29. While Lenoir made strides in his play, allowing a completion percentage of 48.5% against him, adding Porter Jr. could potentially revitalize their secondary as they compete in a challenging NFC West division.
