NFL results: Broncos gain strong advantage in AFC West

Broncos Triumph Over Chiefs in Tight Match

The Denver Broncos managed to shake off their past struggles against the Kansas City Chiefs, converting on two crucial third downs that set up Will Lutz for a decisive 35-yard field goal. In the end, they came out on top with a score of 22-19.

The Broncos’ defense really shined, successfully keeping Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense from finding their rhythm. Even with some penalties on defensive back Riley Moss, it was Jaquan McMillian who really proved to be a problem for the Chiefs, making significant plays when it counted.

McMillian intercepted Mahomes in the third quarter and added a sack with just under four minutes remaining. He finished the game with six tackles, two sacks, and two pass breakups. Justin Strnado led the Broncos with ten tackles overall, while DJ Jones contributed with three tackles, including a sack. The Chiefs struggled offensively, managing only 311 yards across 62 plays. Though they secured 19 first downs, they faltered in the red zone, converting just one out of four attempts.

Quarterback Bo Nix connected with Troy Franklin for a 32-yard gain on a pivotal third down, allowing Lutz to attempt an easier field goal. Nix completed 24 of his 37 attempts for a total of 295 passing yards. Running back Jaleel McLaughlin was the one to score the only touchdown for the Broncos, making a strong run into the end zone during the third quarter.

Franklin led the receiving corps with four catches for 84 yards.

With the Chargers falling to the Jaguars, the Broncos improved to 9-2 with this victory, solidifying their lead in the AFC West. After a rough stretch of losing 16 games in a row to the Chiefs, they’ve now won three of their last four matchups against them.

If they keep up this momentum, the Broncos may reclaim the AFC West title for the first time since the 2015 season—a year that saw their defense play a key role in securing a Super Bowl win. It’s interesting to note that they also bested the Eagles in last year’s Super Bowl.

On the other side, things are looking grim for Kansas City’s playoff hopes. Currently at 5-5, they risk missing the postseason altogether. If the season concluded with this game, players would find themselves cleaning out their lockers on Monday.

As it stands, the Chiefs are sitting at ninth in the rankings, trailing the Jaguars by one game, but the Texans have the edge due to a tiebreaker advantage based on conference games.

This shift certainly complicates Kansas City’s bid to secure their eighth consecutive AFC Championship.

In the game, Mahomes completed 29 of 45 passes, tossing one touchdown and also throwing an interception. The touchdown went to Travis Kelce, who recorded nine catches for a total of 91 yards and that single touchdown.
