NFL staff member critically hurt in shooting at Manhattan office

NFL employees were reported to have sustained serious injuries during a mass shooting at the league’s headquarters located at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. This terrible incident led to five fatalities, which included one police officer, as the gunmen opened fire before ultimately taking their own lives.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell communicated with all league employees about the traumatic events. In his messages, he noted that one employee was critically injured in the attack and is currently hospitalized in stable condition. He reassured staff that they believe everyone else is safe and that the building has been mostly cleared.

Goodell urged employees to stay updated by monitoring emergency notifications as the situation was still evolving.

The NYPD has identified the officer killed in the shooting as Didalur Islam, a 36-year-old Bangladesh immigrant who was one of two uniformed officers on-site. He was working as security for Rudin Management Company at the time of the incident.

In his statement, Goodell expressed gratitude for the law enforcement officers’ swift actions in response to the threat while remembering the sacrifice made to protect others.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tish confirmed that the shooter acted alone, identifying him as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old from Las Vegas with a documented history of mental health challenges. Tish mentioned that Tamura traveled across the country and his vehicle was spotted in Columbia, New Jersey before the shooting.

Security footage captured Tamura entering the building and starting to fire almost immediately. After shooting the security guard, he continued his rampage, waiting for an elevator before eventually shooting more victims and then taking his own life. Tamura legally possessed a concealed weapon permit in Nevada.

The NYPD has since cleared the building to ensure it is safe and that there are no further threats.

In his letter to the employees, Goodell highlighted the supportive resources available to assist them in dealing with these tragic events, including grief counselors. He noted, perhaps understandably, that employees in New York are encouraged to work remotely for the time being and that security measures would be increased at 345 Park Avenue in the following days and weeks.

Goodell reassured staff, stating, “You are a vital part of the NFL family. Together, we will navigate through this.”
