NFL to expand international footprint over next 2 seasons

The NFL continues to expand its global footprint.

Dublin, Madrid and Berlin are set to hold their first NFL regular season games next season, the NFL announced on Friday, days before the Super Bowl.

The Los Angeles Rams held a game in Melbourne, Australia in 2026, with the first NFL game being played on that continent.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will play in the historic Croke Park in the Ireland capital.

“I think the feeling we all heard from all of us is the excitement that brings a regular season game to Ireland along with the Steelers and how special it is. And it's finally back to the fans. “We're going to do this,” Peter O'Reilly, NFL's vice president of international events, said in a statement.

“We see Irish fans traveling to the game in London, Germany and elsewhere, and this is a game in Irish soil, Dublin, Croke Park and an opportunity to create an incredible atmosphere. ”

The Steelers played the Chicago Bears in a preseason game at Croke Park in 1997.

The Indianapolis Colts will be the home team for the games at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, while the Miami Dolphins will be the home team for Madrid.

The dolphins perform at the Bernabeu, the home stadium of Spanish football club Real Madrid.

The Rams will be the home team when they play for Melbourne, Australia in 2026. They will play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which can accommodate around 100,000 spectators as part of a multi-year deal to play the game in Australia.

“This is a big statement,” O'Reilly said. “Maybe you didn't think this was real a few years ago. I think I have a commitment to becoming a commissioner, 32 owners and a real global sport property. That's me. It means expanding our footprint. It is part of the world and exposes more fans around the world, in this case Australia and Melbourne fans to our amazing sports.”

O'Reilly also said the game in Melbourne will likely be played in week one and given as much time as possible to adjust to different times.

The NFL can play up to eight games internationally in 2025. London hosts three, with the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns respectively being home teams for the game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Jets will also be the home team for the game at Wembley Stadium.

As the international consumer market moves, Ireland will by far become the smallest NFL ever entered.
