Super Bowl winner Derek Wolf is now an NFL veteran, but until 2021 he played as a defensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens.
Wolf announced his retirement in 2022, leaving behind some not-so-great memories of his final few seasons.
“It was hell,” Wolf says. Alex SteinLooking back on the COVID-19 pandemic, he said, “Football has become boring because of it. Seriously. The thing I loved the most, I started to hate because of football.”
“‘As soon as you take your helmet off you’ve got to put a mask on,'” he mimics. “Hey, I’m on the field, headbutting these guys, and there’s spit flying and blood and sweat flying and now you’re telling me to put a mask on?”
Wolff also recalled drinking a protein shake after two days of practice.
“I had a drink, walked out the next day and there was a $15,000 fine on my locker,” Wolf said, “and they said I refused to wear a mask.”
“I saw you walk 15 steps without a mask and I thought you were literally taking money out of my bank account,” he continued, adding, “You know this doesn’t work and underwear doesn’t stop you from farting.”
“Just like with vaccines, it’s all about compliance,” Stein agreed.
The pressure on NFL players to get vaccinated has been even worse.
“When the vaccine finally became available, the coach stood in front of the defense, or rather the whole team, and said, ‘When you acquire a player, you’re going to have two players at the same level. One is vaccinated and one is not. You have to choose one of them. The player who’s vaccinated is going to be used,'” he explains.
“Every day they tried to pressure me to get the vaccine. I told them, ‘Listen, my wife is 1,000 percent against it. If I get the vaccine, she’ll be furious,'” he said. “They were like, ‘Well, just lie to your wife.'”
“‘You want me to lie to my wife about this?'” he continues. “‘You’re crazy.'”
