The company in question is Prinx Chengshan Tire North America Inc.announced that it is currently working on a fix for this issue and as a result, Fortune Tormenta and Prinx Hicountry replacement tires in sizes 100 and larger will be recalled.
According to NHTSA, the company said that despite being labeled as a snow tire, it “does not have sufficient traction to perform in all snowy weather conditions.”
“Thus, these tires do not meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 139, New Pneumatic Radial Tires for Light Motor Vehicles,” the agency said.
The tire in question also has the Three Peaks Mountain Snowflake symbol on it, further indicating that it is being marketed as a winter tire.
Citing NHTSA documents, the company claimed that while the tires passed European testing, they likely would not meet U.S. traction standards.
NHTSA noted that winter tires are specifically designed to give drivers more control in snowy and icy conditions, so a lack of traction on replacement tires increases the risk of a crash.
The company added that notices will be sent to owners starting February 1st.cent Next year.
