Nicholas Brendon was involved in a contentious legal dispute with construction workers prior to his untimely death on Friday.
The former “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star had been in a legal battle over more than $120,000 with Britton Excavation and Construction Services. He alleged that Stephen Britton, the contractor, failed to finalize renovations on his home in Ohio after Brendon had already paid him $79,441 for necessary medical adjustments.
Brendon mentioned that only $7,622 worth of fence installation had been completed before Britton ended their agreement.
In December, Britton sought a civil stalking protection order against Brendon, claiming that he became worried for the safety of himself and his workers. Documents indicate that Britton accused Brendon of using an air tag to track him.
During a court hearing, Britton expressed, “I was warned about my iPhone picking something up. I informed my wife, and we discovered the tracking device together.”
Despite Britton stating he felt “extreme fear” for his life, the judge turned down his request for a protection order, according to reports.
Britton had also mentioned feeling uneasy about working in Brendon’s home, citing concerns about axes and weapons, arguing that Brendon’s behavior was unrelated to drugs, which became a point of contention during the proceedings.
Brendon had faced charges in 2021 regarding prescription fraud and was sentenced to probation after pleading guilty. However, he denied any threats, claiming, “I’m not threatening people.” His attorney supported this, asserting that Brendon’s demeanor was calm and non-threatening.
Britton responded, stating, “My privacy has been violated.” He alleged that Brendon and his assistant, Theresa Fortier, admitted to placing the tracking device in Britton’s tool bag, although they later denied the accusation.
Fortier defended her actions in court, explaining that she had sought a quiet place to rest amid the chaos of the construction.
Brendon’s family later announced his passing, explaining he died in his sleep from natural causes. They expressed their sorrow and highlighted his work as an actor, alongside his recent interests in painting and art.
They reflected on his passion, sensitivity, and creative drive, noting that those close to him recognized his art as a true representation of his character. They added that he had faced struggles but was on treatment and hopeful about his future when he passed away.
