Nick Kyrgios Triumphs Over Aryna Sabalenka in Exhibition Match
In Sunday’s much-anticipated “Battle of the Sexes” exhibition tennis match, Nick Kyrgios secured a straightforward victory against Aryna Sabalenka, winning both sets 6-3.
“I doubt many would want to be in this situation, especially me,” Kyrgios reflected. “The atmosphere was going to be challenging. The score may look close, but I felt the pressure out there. And, you know, the crowd can be a big factor. I was a bit nervous.”
Having been sidelined by injury and currently ranked around 670-671 in ATP singles, Kyrgios faced off against Sabalenka, a four-time Grand Slam champion.
Competing in front of a sold-out crowd at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai, Kyrgios adapted to a slightly smaller court on Sabalenka’s side, managing to clinch the win in a match that followed modified rules. The match had a unique twist with a one serve per point rule, causing both players to struggle with their serves at pivotal moments. Kyrgios managed to gain a 4-3 lead and took the first set.
Even after falling behind 1-3 in the second set, Kyrgios made a comeback to win 6-3 against Sabalenka. He praised her competitive spirit, describing her as a worthy adversary.
“It was definitely a challenging match,” Kyrgios noted. “She’s a fantastic competitor and a champion. I mean, she’s won multiple Grand Slams. Honestly, I was a bit unsure about what to expect.”
“Regardless of my part in this event, it was a remarkable opportunity. She broke my serve a couple of times,” he admitted. “I really had to dig deep because she was applying pressure and hitting some impressive shots. I’d love to go up against her again and showcase our skills. In the end, we both battled hard and had several breaks.”
Kyrgios expressed his appreciation for both Sabalenka and the event, calling it a significant moment for tennis.
Sabalenka echoed Kyrgios’s sentiments. “I think we had an exciting match,” she remarked. “He showed resilience. Things got intense. I was pleased to see him fighting back after I broke his serve. The match had a high level.”
She shared her own thoughts about the match, saying, “I made some good shots and moved well to the net… nice drop shots and serving from Nick. It was a fun experience. I feel like next time, I’ll have a better idea of his tactics and we can both elevate our game.”
As the match wrapped up, reactions on social media varied, reflecting the buzz it generated.
