Nick Lachey’s marriage to Jessica Simpson left him with ‘scars’ as singer makes rare comment on relationship

Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson have been divorced for nearly 20 years. Both have remarried and each have three children.

Nick, who co-hosts the new season of Netflix's Ultimatum: Marry or Move On with his second wife, Vanessa Lachey née Minnillo, tries to show empathy for his cast, saying, She made rare comments about her divorce from Simpson. He admitted that he has “scars” from the split.

The show follows multiple couples who are in disagreement about the certainty of marriage and explores different relationships to decide whether they want to commit to marriage or move on.

“I've been married and divorced before, too, so I understand that hurt and that scar,” Nick told the cast, sitting next to Vanessa at the dinner table.

He and Simpson co-starred on the reality show Newlyweds but officially divorced in 2006 after splitting the previous year. The two met through a common manager in 1998 and dated on and off until they married in October 2002.

Shortly after the divorce, Nick released a pointed ballad called “What's Left of Me,” which referenced his failed marriage. Minilo, who was a model at the time, appeared in the song's music video, and the two soon began dating. However, their relationship did not accelerate like her relationship with Simpson.

“As you may have heard, I gave Nick an ultimatum. We had been together for five years,” Vanessa told the cast. “So I talked about the fact that I gave an ultimatum. But what I haven't talked about is what I actually really did.”

“I kept pointing, and I took that finger and pointed it at me. And I had to say, 'What am I not going to give him?' What I'm asking for. Even though I didn't give him that kind of respect and there was an age difference, I was still going out and partying with girls,” she admitted. “And I told him I wanted to be a mom. He was like, 'Okay, I'll see you when I get home at 2:30.'” We were both Scorpios. He was stubborn, stubborn, and had a hard time getting along. ”

Nick continued the conversation and said that their relationship was never perfect.

“I want to encourage everyone, don't let your past define your future,” Nick told the group. “What I really wanted all my life was to have a beautiful marriage and a beautiful family. If I hadn't kept that belief, I never would have realized the beautiful life I had with this woman. And we sit here, we don't understand.”

The show's release and Nick's comments come as Simpson and her husband, former NFL tight end Eric Johnson, are currently facing breakup rumors. Fans speculated that Simpson and Johnson, who married in 2014, had fallen out of love when they posted a cryptic Instagram in November discussing new music.
