Port St. Lucy – Nick Madrigal's major league resume does not include activities at shortstops, but I'm sure he can handle the position.
The 27-year-old infielder – a former round draft pick by the White Sox – is expected to see action at short stops in the Mets exhibition season as the team evaluates Francis Colindore's potential backup options .
Madrigal played the Cubs' 3 bases (and second in action) last year, and was signed by the Mets last month to provide a late glove behind Mark Bientos.
However, the Mets could carry only one backup infielder, and the player's shortstop experience is a plus.
“I don't have that many games [at shortstop] Madrigal, who played the position in Oregon, said: “I feel like I can do that perfectly.”
Luisangel Acuña, Brett Baty and Jared Young are others in the camp who compete for backup infield work.
Ronnie Mauricio, who has returned from surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, is not expected to be an option to start the season at the major league level.

Jet Williams may have avoided the worst when he was excavated into the “flesh-quality area” on his right hand by Blake Tidwell during live batting practice. Williams, a prospect at the organization's top position player, said he had no plans for the X-ray and was “all good.” Williams will be looking at second base, shortstop and center field this spring.
Jeff McNeill, Sterling Marte and Tyrone Taylor were among the position players who arrived Friday. The first official training day for position players is Monday, following the Saturday reporting date.
