Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally: ‘What keeps us together? We genuinely enjoy each other’s company, and I suggest that’ | Comedy

If you had the chance to join a reality TV show, which one would it be?
MM: How about we go for Temptation Island?
No: No way!
MM: I think the real choice would be a traitor, right? Or maybe Survivor.
No: I’m leaning towards Survivor or maybe a solo show. But if we decide to join together, I think I’d fit in as a traitor. But honestly, I don’t want to compete against you on any show.

Nick, what show do you think you could handle alone?
No: I’m pretty stubborn. I might only have some of the survival skills that others do, but I’d still give it a shot. Honestly, I enjoy my quiet moments.
MM: Killing animals doesn’t sound too pleasant.
No: It’s about luck. Sometimes you just have to see where your camp is. I’m good at fishing, and those who can regularly catch fish usually fare well. I’m not planning to hunt a moose for meat, but if I can catch fish, I’ll manage.

What made you laugh the most recently?
No: Megan was in a film called Dicks: The Musical, directed by Larry Charles. Her performance was incredible; I was honestly envious of those seeing it for the first time. Highly recommend it!
MM: Nick has some funny dance moves. Back in school, he and his cousins used to put on breakdancing shows. Did you see his TOCK or flip-flop?
No: Yup, I’ve still got the moves.
MM: He does some breakdancing but tries other styles too—pretty impressive.

Who’s the funniest person you know? You can’t say each other.
MM: We know so many funny people. If I have to pick, it’d be Kate Berland, one of my best friends.
No: Tough choice, but I lean towards Conan O’Brien.
MM: I thought you might say that!

You two have been together for 25 years. What’s your superpower as a couple?
No: We genuinely like each other. It’s important to commit to someone for life, and we take that promise seriously. When people complain about relationships, it’s crucial to recognize possibilities—whether that’s change, fixing things, or making different choices. We’re open, caring, and prioritize our relationship. It’s always evolving. Plus, Megan has yet to, you know… that keeps things interesting!
MM: Maybe one day, sweetheart.

What are each of your worst habits?
No: Megan often worries when she’s trying to fall asleep, which can be tough.
MM: Is procrastination one of your habits? It’s pretty evident.
No: We’ll talk about this later.
MM: That works.
No: Yeah, I tend to delay until there’s a deadline. Then I stress about it.

What do you do when you’re putting things off?
No: I tend to overbook myself. I’m not the type to play video games or chill—always juggling multiple tasks. If I’m supposed to be working on something, I end up saying, “Oh, I’m too busy writing.” I wear a lot of hats, but somehow, I manage.
MM: You’re definitely the better organizer.

What’s the first thing you do upon arriving at a hotel?
MM: Oh man, I have to check all the lights to make sure they meet my standards. I can’t stand LED lights—incandescents just make things better! I often rearrange lamps and furniture.
No: Sometimes I end up buying different light bulbs.
MM: That’s happened before!
No: But after a long day of travel, you drop your bag, and Megan’s like, “Good luck with that.”
MM: I even started an interior design business with a friend; it really matters to me! How can you relax in weird lighting? Not cute.

What do you spend too much money on?
MM: Light bulbs! [laughs]. Seriously, what do you even buy?
No: Work boots.
MM: I choose all his clothes—I’m like his personal shopper.
No: But when it’s grilling season, I’m all about the best grass-fed beef and don’t mind paying a bit extra.

What valuable lessons have you learned from your colleagues?
No: Well, I’m working with Nicole Kidman right now, and she showed up to work despite being sick. With everything going on, this was a major shoot. A normal person might have stayed home, but she pushed through and got the scenes done. I learned a lot from that. Next time I’m feeling under the weather, I might just stay in bed. Nicole would probably roll her eyes at me.

What insights did you gain from Nick’s experiences?
MM: He takes the time to know everyone, from crew members to directors. I once worked with Susan Sarandon, and she treated everyone poorly—not great. As a woman in the industry, I witnessed how being strong while remaining kind is vital.

What books or films do you find yourself revisiting, and why?
No: Wendell Berry is my ideal author. His essays and poetry resonate deeply with me. He inspires me to be a better person.
MM: A book I go back to often is Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee. It’s really heavy, but I appreciate its depth.

What’s the oldest item you own, and why do you still have it?
No: It’s my virginity—ask Megan for the story behind that.
MM: I still have my childhood teddy bear, even if it’s a little worn out from all the hugs.

It’s becoming quite the topic, Nick.
No: [laughs]
MM: Right? One day!
