Nick Reiner, 32, charged with fatally stabbing his parents, pleads not guilty.

Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of director Rob Reiner, entered a not guilty plea on Monday regarding two counts of first-degree murder linked to the fatal stabbings of his parents last December. Reports indicate that this hearing took place in a busy Los Angeles courtroom, where his attorney, Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene, spoke on his behalf. She made her arguments from behind a glass partition.

Nick has been held without bail since the tragic deaths of his parents, Rob and Michelle Singer Reiner, who were found dead in their Brentwood home on December 14. At his court appearance, he had a shaved head and was donning a brown prison uniform, unlike the suicide prevention smock he wore during his initial appearance.

The judge set a date for Nick to return to court on April 29 to schedule a preliminary hearing. During this hearing, prosecutors will present their evidence, and the judge will determine if it’s sufficient to move forward with a trial.

District Attorney Nathan Hockman mentioned that his office has not yet made a decision regarding whether to pursue the death penalty against Nick. He emphasized that this decision follows a careful examination of aggravating and mitigating circumstances.

Reiner’s not guilty plea is not unusual at this stage, as indicated by reports. Previously, his former high-profile lawyer, Alan Jackson, withdrew from the case citing reasons beyond both his and Nick’s control. Jackson was, however, unable to disclose specific details due to legal and ethical constraints but expressed his commitment to Nick’s interests. He firmly stated that the legal process would ultimately clarify the facts surrounding the case.

Deputy District Attorney Habib Balian noted that while they await the complete autopsy report, all other evidence has been shared with the defense. Initial findings from the Los Angeles County coroner indicated that Rob and Michelle died from multiple sharp force injuries and were likely killed shortly before their bodies were discovered.
