Nick Reiner, son of filmmaker Rob Reiner, is set to appear in court on Wednesday to face charges of murdering both his parents. He missed a previous court date due to reported medical concerns.
The 32-year-old is accused of fatally stabbing his father, a notable Hollywood figure, and his mother, Michelle, in their home. Prosecutors have indicated that he may face the death penalty if convicted.
On Tuesday, Nick’s lawyer, Alan Jackson, described the situation as procedural, despite his client failing to show up in court. He noted that Nick’s medical status is evaluated daily.
Earlier reports mentioned that Nick has struggled with addiction and was under suicide watch while incarcerated.
Rob, 78, and Michelle, 70, were discovered dead in their Brentwood residence, allegedly by their daughter Romy, who is 28. The couple had been married for nearly four decades.
The attorney did not disclose details about who is covering Nick’s legal expenses or if the Reiner family is involved in that aspect.
After the killings, police found the mother in a room where she had identified her brother as a potential suspect.
The authorities are still determining the exact time of death. However, evidence suggests that the murders occurred early Sunday morning, following a heated argument Nick had with his father at a Christmas party hosted by Conan O’Brien.
Law enforcement teams later arrested Nick about 25 miles from his parents’ home, and he remains in custody without bail in a correctional facility.
