Right now, there are two noteworthy head coaching positions open in the SEC—Florida and LSU—both having recently let their head coaches go.
Lane Kiffin, who’s had a successful stint revamping the Ole Miss Rebels, is rumored to be in the mix for these roles. It’s an interesting situation, really.
But then again, Nick Saban didn’t hold back. He essentially told Kiffin to slow down and reconsider. According to Saban, the jobs at LSU and Florida might not actually be better than what Kiffin has at Ole Miss.
Saban suggested that the landscape has changed, and he mentioned, “Jobs that weren’t great jobs before are now.” He acknowledges that while Kiffin is a known name at both Florida and LSU, it’s debatable if either position is truly an upgrade. After all, Kiffin has access to solid players at Ole Miss that he might not find elsewhere.
Kiffin previously worked under Saban as Alabama’s offensive coordinator, so it’s interesting to hear such perspectives coming from his former boss.
Saban expressed frustration with the current state of college football coaching, noting how money now plays a dominant role in these decisions. It seems like donors have a significant influence—almost like fans pushing for action if they’re unhappy with the team’s performance.
In recent coaching changes, Brian Kelly was the last high-profile casualty after losing to Texas A&M. He joined a list that included other big names like Billy Napier and James Franklin. There have been more shake-ups, with coaches from various schools also facing firings, including Sam Pittman, Mike Gundy, Deshaun Foster, Brent Pry, and Trent Brey.
