Tim Walz Withdraws from Minnesota Re-election Race Amid Fraud Scandal

Independent journalist Nick Shirley expressed that Governor Tim Walz is “done” following his decision to withdraw from the race for a third term. This announcement comes amidst growing criticism related to Shirley’s viral reports on alleged fraud in Minnesota.

Last month, Shirley’s 42-minute video investigation of a Minnesota child care center, which reportedly is inactive despite receiving millions in government funding, stirred excitement online, racking up over 138 million views on X. This ultimately led to a federal investigation and the suspension of child care payments in the state.

Walz faced significant scrutiny due to his handling of a major welfare fraud investigation. Announcing his exit from the race, he experienced a marked decline from his earlier high-profile status as the Democratic vice-presidential candidate in 2024.

In a bold declaration, Shirley took to X, exclaiming, “I’m done with Tim Walz.” Previously, Walz had criticized Shirley, labeling him a “far-right YouTuber” and a “paranoid conspiracy theorist,” though he did not specifically name Shannon in his withdrawal announcement.

Walz noted that “Republican political gamesmanship is only making it harder to win this battle.” He reflected on his decision with his family and team over the holidays, stating, “I came to the conclusion that I could not devote myself fully to a political campaign. Every minute I spend defending my own political interests cannot be spent protecting the people of Minnesota from criminals who prey on our generosity.”

In a twist, Shirley responded to Walz’s statements and mentioned, “We should have put Minnesota first when we had the chance. Instead, we allowed billions of dollars in fraud to occur across the state.” He even humorously pointed out a day care center that once infamously misspelled “learning” on its sign.

Walz’s campaign for a third term began in September, but in recent weeks he’s faced backlash from various quarters, including President Trump and members of both parties, regarding the ongoing fraud scandal in a state recognized for its governance.

Federal officials have stated that Minnesota’s fraud crisis could amount to $9 billion, noting that the theft charges predominantly involve individuals from the state’s large Somali community. Prosecutions indicate that the scale of the fraud exceeds $1 billion, with those charged allegedly using the funds for extravagant purchases and, possibly, funding terrorism abroad.

Walz accepted responsibility for the scandal, declaring, “This is on my watch, I’m responsible for it, and more importantly, I’m the one to fix it.” His current term is set to end in January 2027.
