Mavericks General Manager Quashes Coaching Rumors Surrounding Jason Kidd

Nico Harrison, the general manager of the Mavericks, has put to rest the swirling rumors regarding Jason Kidd’s coaching future.

“Are there any rumors about J-Kidd?” he asked reporters after the Mavericks selected the Cooper Flag as the first pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. “I thought I’d shut them down. Yes, he’ll be head coach next year.”

Even though Kidd currently leads the Mavericks, speculation about his potential move to the Knicks has emerged since New York dismissed Tom Thibodeau in early June.

On June 9, it was reported that there was mutual interest between Kidd and the Knicks for the vacant position.

The Knicks sought permission from Dallas to interview the Hall of Fame point guard on June 11, but the Mavericks refused.

Still, the speculation hasn’t died down. According to NBA Insider Scoop B. Robinson, Kidd perceives the Knicks opening as “a dream job.”

Following the Knicks’ decision to part ways with Thibodeau, ESPN.com shared on June 5 that the Dallas organization was aware Kidd was “not on board” with certain internal changes, such as dismissing athletic trainer Casey Smith, who now works with New York.

Kidd’s ties to New York and its basketball legacy are strong. He brought the Mavericks to the NBA Finals last season and boasts a remarkable 19-year playing career that included 10 All-Star selections.

The native of San Francisco wrapped up his playing days with the Knicks in the 2012-2013 season, collaborating with talents like Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler.

Recently, it appears the Knicks’ search for a new head coach has turned to former Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins, former Kings coach Mike Brown, and Pelicans assistant James Borrego.

A few weeks ago, New York reached out to several teams to request interviews with current coaches, including Ime Udoka for the Rockets, Billy Donovan for the Bulls, Chris Finch for the Timberwolves, and Quinn Snyder for the Hawks—but all requests were turned down.

Kidd still has two years left on his contract in Dallas. With the recent surprising trade of Luka Dončić to the Lakers, Kidd now has a new young star to develop.
