Nico Harrison’s Departure from the Mavericks
Nico Harrison is no longer with the Mavericks, and he seems to want everyone to know it. Following his dismissal from the team on Tuesday, he made a notable change to his Instagram profile, where he now describes himself as “unemployed.”
Harrison became the Mavericks’ general manager in 2021, helping to lead them to the NBA Finals in 2024. However, he quickly faced backlash from fans after a surprising trade sent star player Luka Doncic to the Lakers in February, a move that many viewed as controversial.
This season has been rocky for the Mavericks, who started off with a dismal record of 3 wins and 8 losses. Notably, one of those losses included a 13-point defeat to the Bucks this past Monday.
Cheers of “Fire Nico!” echoed at the American Airlines Center, reflecting the growing discontent among fans. Ultimately, team governor Patrick Dumont expressed regret over the trade of Doncic and decided it was time to part ways with Harrison.
As Harrison departs, assistant general managers Michael Finley and Matt Ricciardi will temporarily oversee basketball operations for the Mavericks.
In a letter addressed to fans, Dumont articulated the team’s frustrations with their poor start. He noted that while there were optimistic expectations following the Finals appearance, reality has not aligned with hope.
Dumont emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards. “No one around the Mavericks is happy about the start to what they believed was a promising season,” he stated. “If results do not meet expectations, it is my responsibility to act. Therefore, I have made the decision to part ways with General Manager Nico Harrison.”
He further reassured fans that, despite the challenges, the Mavericks are committed to returning to success. They intend to invest in the future, focusing on winning and ultimately contending for championships in Dallas.
