NHL Player Saves Family While Boating
The NHL offseason is in full swing, but that hasn’t stopped some top players from making headlines. One such player is New Jersey Devils captain, Nico Hischier, who, this summer in Switzerland, found himself in a position of heroism.
Hischier, the first overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, was rowing near the Engehard Weir, a dam close to Bern, when he spotted a family struggling in the water.
This family, consisting of two adults and two children, was caught in a rubber boat, getting dangerously close to the dam with no way to escape. Thankfully, Hischier intervened, taking action that many have labeled “heroic.”
While it’s fantastic to hear about his courageous act, what really stands out are his remarks afterward. He mentioned, “In a situation like this, everyone appreciates the assistance, and we were all relieved that no one was hurt in the end.” He also acknowledged the first responders who came to help.
One could say this is what you’d expect from a hockey player, right? When asked to recount the incident, Hischier downplayed his role, saying, “It was a team effort. We just went out there and executed and got the puck at the net.”
This kind of humility is exactly what fans love to see in a captain. On top of this, it’s worth mentioning that the Devils recently reinforced their commitment to him by signing Hischier to a five-year contract extension, worth $11.7 million per year, which will kick in after this season.
