Nicole C. Mullen Shares Her Journey in New Book

Nicole C. Mullen, a well-known figure in the Christian music scene for her hit songs like “My Redeemer Lives,” is now inviting readers to explore her life beyond music. Her new book, It’s Never Wrong to Do the Right Thing, reflects her admiration for the people who’ve influenced her and shares personal lessons learned through adversity. Many may not be aware that Nicole has faced her share of struggles, much like anyone else. In this book, she opens the door to her experiences, hoping readers will connect with her on a deeper level.

CW: Do you think your writing has a rhythm to it?
NM: I appreciate that thought! Honestly, I’ve tried to write with a rhythm that resonates with how I live my life. It’s a journey we all share. None of us stay at the peak; we all go through valleys. During those low points, it’s important to remember that this too shall pass. Like the scripture says, “I walk through the valley of the shadow of death; I fear no evil because you are with me.” It’s not just my struggles I wanted to reveal, but also the stories of others, so I can connect with readers and remind them of our shared need for guidance and faith. It’s about making choices that honor God, which ultimately benefits our families and communities.

CW: What prompted you to share some of your darkest moments in this book?
NM: I think many of us find ourselves in those tough times. Sometimes, in the Christian community, we act like we’re untouched by darkness. But I’ve learned that those times often highlight Christ’s presence the most. They help us relate to Biblical figures and even heroes from other faiths. Without those challenging moments, we wouldn’t see how brightly Christ can shine. I wanted to be open about my failures, but also to shine a light on how Christ still leads us to victory.

CW: Why is authenticity important in helping others?
NM: We’re all evolving, to be honest. Just the other night, I was talking with a single mom who mentioned that we should always know the right choice to make. But I think that’s not always clear-cut. Even when we seek guidance through prayer or advice, people still stumble. It doesn’t necessarily mean we’ve made a poor choice. Think about Adam and Eve—God called them “very good,” yet they still faced struggles. So, it’s about making the best choices we can based on circumstances, not controlling others’ decisions.

CW: You juggle so many roles—actress, writer, singer. How do you manage it all?
NM: The answer lies in Philippians 4:13. I navigate these different paths, peaks, and valleys with the strength that comes from Christ. I often feel unqualified for so much of what I do, but I’ve realized that God doesn’t necessarily choose those who are already equipped; He calls those who He wants to use.

CW: You discuss domestic abuse in your book. What message do you have for those experiencing it now?
NM: Thank you for asking. First and foremost, I want anyone in that situation to know that God sees and hears you. He cares deeply. Just like the Bible shows us, He is present in our pain. My advice? Call out to Him first. Yes, you may need to seek immediate help, but take that moment to reach out to God first. Ask Him for guidance and wisdom; I truly believe He will provide you with comfort and direction. He is there to deliver you, and I stand as proof of that.
