Tragic Fire at Swiss Nightclub Claims Lives
A deadly fire at an upscale nightclub in the Swiss Alps resulted in at least 40 fatalities and nearly 120 injuries during New Year’s Eve celebrations. Authorities believe the fire was ignited by a champagne bottle on fire, which the nightclub, Le Constellation, had previously promoted in a video showcasing waitresses carrying bottles with glowing candles.
The club, located in Crans-Montana, had shared a video on YouTube where staff members were seen navigating through a packed crowd with bottles held high—sometimes almost touching the ceiling.
The terrifying incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m., spreading rapidly through the crowded venue. Witnesses mentioned that a bartender was seen carrying a female employee while holding sparklers and champagne bottles adorned with smoke bombs near the ceiling. Moments later, flames erupted overhead.
Valais Attorney General Béatrice Pillowside indicated that a drunken firework was likely to blame, triggering a phenomenon known as a flashover that caused the flames to expand swiftly. Survivors described the ceiling engulfed in fire within seconds, highlighting the chaotic atmosphere as smoke rapidly filled the room.
A 16-year-old survivor recounted feeling overwhelmed by the smoke and escaping by dislodging a plexiglass panel. He noted the alarming sight of a waitress arriving with a champagne bottle and a sparkler before chaos ensued.
As investigations continue, authorities are looking into potential criminal negligence related to the fire, including charges of negligent homicide or injury. Hundreds have gathered outside the nightclub to honor the victims, laying flowers and lighting candles as families await news about their loved ones. The death toll could potentially rise to 47, according to Italian authorities.
Swiss President Guy Palmerin described the incident as a significant tragedy for the nation, given that many of the victims were young revelers celebrating New Year’s Eve. While most of the injured were Swiss citizens, it has been confirmed that four individuals from Serbia and others from Bosnia, Belgium, and Portugal were also affected. Some nationals from Italy and France remain unaccounted for as search efforts continue.
Le Constellation has yet to respond publicly regarding the incident.
