Texas Tech Softball Star Nijaly Canady Faces Ups and Downs in WCWS

Nijaly Canady, a standout pitcher for Texas Tech, showcased her skills in a tough match on Wednesday night, but it proved costly for the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech was just four outs away from winning Game 1 of the Women’s College World Series Finals. Canady was on form, keeping the Texas lineup scoreless in a tight 1-0 game. But then, things took a confusing turn.

Canady intentionally walked Texas catcher Lees Atwood after facing two runners, but it appeared that she inadvertently left a pitch too close to the plate. Atwood capitalized on this, allowing both runners to score, putting Texas ahead.

In the end, Texas Tech couldn’t mount a comeback in the final innings, leading to a Game 1 loss.

Canady, who has rarely faltered, is considered one of the top pitchers in college softball. Originally hailing from Kansas, she played her first two seasons at Stanford, boasting an impressive 41-10 record with a remarkable 0.67 ERA and 555 strikeouts against just 65 walks.

Last season, she was recognized as the USA Softball College Player of the Year, earned the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year title, and made the All-American team. She decided to leave Stanford for Texas Tech, motivated in part by NIL opportunities, hoping to help the struggling program.

This season, Canady led the country with an ERA under 1.00, steering the Red Raiders to a 59-13 record as they pursued their first national title.

It seems she’s used to throwing strikes, and perhaps that’s where things got tricky. Atwood mentioned in an interview that she noticed Canady’s pitch was right in her hitting zone.

“I knew I had to take risks to do something for my team,” Atwood stated.

Ironically, Atwood had been hitless before that pivotal moment, making the situation all the more challenging for Canady and her team with their earlier decisions.

The Red Raiders are set to take the field again on Thursday, with Texas having the chance to clinch the championship in a best-of-three series.
