Nike under scrutiny in the battle to defend girls’ and women’s sports

Some female athletes are sending a strong message to Nike, advocating for fairness in women’s sports and the exclusion of biological men from various levels of competition. Featured athletes include Riley Gaines, Macy Boggs, Lauren Miller, and Payton McNabb, who shared their concerns in a video.

Gaines, a former swimmer for the Kentucky Wildcats, expressed that if given the chance, she’d urge Nike to truly commit to its slogan: “Just do it.” She emphasized support for women and biological reality. Meanwhile, professional golfer Miller encouraged Nike to think about the implications for their daughters, warning that merging men’s and women’s sports could erase women’s achievements.

McNabb recounted a traumatic incident during a high school volleyball game where she was injured by a biological man, leading to her dreams of playing competitively being shattered. Boggs, a high school volleyball player, criticized Nike for what she sees as empty support for women, claiming the company acts only when it’s beneficial.

Others who voiced their opinions include former NCAA swimmer Kaitlynn Wheeler and former Nevada Wolfpack volleyball player Sia Liilii. Nike has not responded to requests for comment regarding these statements.

The company has faced criticism recently over allegations that it supported research into transgender youth and the impact of men participating in women’s sports, with initial reports appearing in a New York Times article.

Nike claimed that this study was not initiated and not currently underway, but the debates continue among athletes and commentators about the implications of these issues in sports.
