Four mothers from Northern California lost their lives at the hands of their abusive partner. Prosecutors now allege that he murdered one of them to prevent her from testifying in domestic violence trials, 15 months after she went missing.
The body of Nikki Chan Sary McCain has yet to be found.
Tyler McCain was taken into custody following an informant’s tip about his confession to Nikki’s murder in May 2024. The Shasta County District Attorney’s Office disclosed that he was last seen alive around that time.
The couple had a troubling history of domestic violence that started back in 2020, including serious altercations in December 2023. Reports indicate that Nikki tied him up and accused him of physical abuse during a confrontation that lasted over three hours.
“We believe Tyler McCain murdered his wife, Nikki, to stop her from testifying in domestic violence cases,” stated Shasta County District Attorney Stephanie A. Brizzy to reporters.
Authorities noted that Nikki McCain went missing on May 18, 2024, shortly after the couple communicated with family about plans to end their 15-year marriage. Her abandoned vehicle was discovered on May 24 near Shasta and Tehama County, about 45 minutes from their home. Blood found in the vehicle was confirmed to be Nikki’s.
Although her body hasn’t been located, the investigation classified her disappearance as a murder in March.
McCain has been charged with one count of murder under special circumstances to prevent testimony.
Additionally, the state is reintroducing domestic violence charges for incidents dating back to 2023. His initial plea was not guilty to felony domestic violence, asserting that Nikki’s injuries were due to another altercation.
Other charges against him include illegal firearm possession and counterfeiting.
This marks the first instance in Shasta County of pursuing a murder charge without a body being present, noted Bridget.
Currently, he remains held without bail and is set to appear in court on Friday.
Authorities are offering a reward of up to $30,000 for anyone who can assist in locating Nikki’s body. Sheriff Michael L. Johnson expressed the hope that this initiative could provide some relief to Nikki’s family, helping them move forward and find closure.
