Nikola Topic’s Heartfelt NBA Debut
When Nikola Topic stepped onto the court for the first time during a Thunder game on Thursday, he was met with a standing ovation from the fans at Paycom Center. It was a moment that really underscored how significant this event was for everyone involved.
Topic, who was the 12th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft and was selected in the first round by the Oklahoma City Thunder, had been gearing up for this debut for over a year. It wasn’t easy; he had missed the previous season entirely due to a torn ACL, which kept him from witnessing any of the Thunder’s playoff runs.
Then came another setback. In October, he underwent surgery for testicular cancer, which led to chemotherapy and caused him to sit out the first 55 games of the season. It’s quite a journey, really. But finally, during a tough 110-93 loss to the Bucks, Topic took to the court. In those 12 minutes, he managed to score two points, contribute one assist, and grab one rebound.
“Honestly, it wouldn’t have mattered if he made or missed every shot he took that night. It’s just a monumental step for him,” said his teammate, Chet Holmgren, reflecting on the significance of the moment.
As Topic checked in, he rubbed his chest under the basket while the crowd cheered him on. He quickly got back into the flow, inbounding the ball and making his way up the court. It was, perhaps, just a small first step, but nevertheless, an important one. Coach Mark Daigneault noted that while Topic had made his return, he was still in the “infant stages” of getting back to peak physical condition.
Before this game, Topic had only played in one preseason game in October and had appeared in two G League games earlier this week. “Fighting cancer is a battle for one’s life,” Holmgren expressed, acknowledging the incredible strength Topic showed. “He could have easily let his struggles consume him. But it’s great to see him back on the court playing basketball.”
Despite not securing a win, the Thunder concluded the All-Star break leading the Western Conference with an impressive record of 42-14. It’s clear there’s a lot to look forward to.
