Nine Killed, Multiple Others Injured After Driver Rams SUV into Crowded Vancouver Street Festival

Nine people have been killed and dozens have been injured after sending SUV carriers to a busy street festival in Vancouver late Saturday night.

AP Report Vancouver police said in a social media post that the vehicle entered Canada Street, where people were attending the Philippines community festival, shortly after 8pm on Friday.

“A lot of people were killed and several other people were injured after the driver drove into the crowd,” police said.

The exact number of deaths and injuries was updated later.

The driver, a 30-year-old Vancouver man, was arrested at the scene, police said.

The Lapu Lapu Day Festival was held in a neighborhood in South Vancouver. A video posted on social media shows that victims and wreckage scattered over the long road are not immobile on the ground.

In still photos of the scene, a black SUV is seen with a crumpled front section.

Rye was asked if the arrested suspect had a criminal history.

“It would be inappropriate for me to enter into such details at this point,” Rai said. He added that it was “unfair” to comment on whether suspects are on bail.

He argued that the focus remains on the victims and their families.

Vancouver Mayor Kenneth Sim said in a social media post the city will provide as much information as possible.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrifying incident at today’s Lapu-Lapu Day event,” Sim said. “Our idea lies in all the people affected and the Filipino community in Vancouver during this incredibly difficult time.”

According to the Associated Press, Vancouver has more than 38,600 residents in the Filipino heritage in 2021, accounting for 5.9% of the city’s total population.
