Nissan, Honda announce plans to consider merger

Japanese automakers Nissan and Honda have agreed to consider a merger and form a joint holding company to create the world's third-largest automaker.

The companies said in a statement Monday that they aim for combined sales of $191 billion and operating income of more than $19 billion through the potential merger.

The two companies hope to conclude negotiations around June 2025 and establish a holding company by August 2026, when both companies' shares will be delisted.

The merger talks come as both automakers struggle to compete with the world's largest electric vehicle makers, including Tesla and Chinese automaker BYD.

The merger will create the world's third-largest automobile group in terms of car sales after Toyota and Volkswagen.

Honda, Japan's second-largest automaker after Toyota, has a market capitalization of over $40 billion, while Nissan, the third largest, has a market capitalization of approximately $10 billion.
