LAPD Chief Under Fire Amid Political Turmoil
Jim McDonnell, the LAPD chief, seems to be doing fairly well, especially considering the challenging political landscape. However, Nithya Raman, a candidate for mayor, has pledged to dismiss him if she wins the election.
This is certainly one of the more outlandish promises of a campaign that appears to be somewhat disconnected from reality.
McDonnell took over the role in November 2024, a time marked by significant upheaval in Los Angeles, including the riots following George Floyd’s death, a rise in crime, and the vaccine mandates that severely impacted the police force.
Faced with a new set of challenges, McDonnell had to manage the sometimes tense relationship between City Hall and the White House, particularly as then-President Donald Trump intensified immigration enforcement at the border.
As a “sanctuary” city within a “sanctuary” state, Los Angeles opted not to collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). While the LAPD wasn’t able to bar ICE completely, its cooperation with federal authorities was quite limited.
Interestingly, Nithya Raman was one of the council members who supported McDonnell during his appointment, voting alongside the majority in favor of Karen Bass’s nomination. This decision didn’t sit well with her local chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America.
So, how has McDonnell performed in his role?
Crime rates have seen a significant decline, boasting the lowest homicide figures in LA since 1966—a notable statistic when you think about it, considering that was years before the infamous Manson murders.
It’s worth mentioning, though, that crime rates have fallen nationwide as well, so perhaps McDonnell doesn’t deserve all the credit.
He has skillfully balanced the demands of local and federal priorities.
Raman has criticized McDonnell for allegedly working with ICE. Maybe he has, but possibly only to safeguard federal officials during tumultuous times. Still, he has consistently refrained from involving the LAPD in immigration enforcement tasks.
On another note, McDonnell pushed back against the Trump administration’s request to deploy the National Guard in LA, which was met with backlash from some conservative groups advocating for law and order.
During a recent event, Raman expressed her discontent, stating that she doesn’t feel McDonnell’s handling of the ICE raids was adequate.
But what could he have done? Allow rioters to confront federal agents and assault government property?
Just imagine the fallout if that occurred. Trump would likely have sent in the National Guard without hesitation, and he might have faced minimal resistance from the courts.
It’s important to note that Raman reportedly enjoyed cocktails during the ICE raids, raising questions about her own level of engagement during the crisis.
Her actions then didn’t seem to align with the urgency of the situation, nor do her dramatic promises today instill confidence in the LAPD, which could lead to lowered morale within the department.
