A family was nearly crushed Wednesday when a huge block of ice appeared to fall from a plane and crashed through the roof of their suburban New Jersey home.
The horrific scene happened around 9:30 p.m. in Paterson, New Jersey, as the Gomez family was sitting at a table in their backyard, less than 12 feet from the crash, according to News 12 New Jersey.
“All of a sudden I heard this hollow noise and honestly didn’t think anything of it and then I heard this big thud!” Sabrina Gomez told the outlet.
A security camera in the backyard captured the family jumping from their seats as they heard the sound of ice blocks hitting the ground.
“It was a big rock … I think it was a big rectangle. When it came down it just shattered everything,” Paul Gomez said.
According to the outlet, the Gomez family home is located directly under several flight paths.
“You look up and it’s like a plane is flying,” Sabrina Gomez said.
Family members then rushed to the front of their home and took video of ice debris covering the driveway.
“Honestly, it was a little scary, but luckily it didn’t hit anybody, it fell on the floor, it fell on the roof so that’s good,” Sabrina Gomez said.
The damage caused by the ice blocks is so severe that the roof may need to be completely replaced.
No one was hurt when the ice fell on the house.
The family has asked the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to investigate the ice, which they believe fell from a passing plane.
The horrific incident comes about a year after a 15-20 pound block of ice crashed into a Massachusetts home, according to The Post. Associated Press.
Jeff Ilg and his wife, Amelia Rainville, were sitting inside their Shirley home in August 2023 when a chunk of ice fell through the roof.
“Basically I heard an explosion,” Ilg said. “It was the loudest pop I’ve ever heard.”
Ilgus rushed upstairs to check on his children, who for some reason continued to sleep through the noise.
He then ran outside and saw huge chunks of ice on the back steps and debris scattered around the backyard and roof.
Ilgu grabbed a flashlight and began looking for damage, but couldn’t find any until he spotted a hole in the roof.
He then went up to the attic, where he found another block of ice.
“As expected, it was inside and it was big,” Ilg told the outlet, adding that the size of the impact on the outside of his home was about 18 inches to 2 feet.
The couple speculated that the body had fallen from a plane en route to Boston Logan International Airport, about 47 miles from their home.
Planes can become frozen by supercooled water, an unstable liquid that can freeze if it hits a plane in the air. Federal Aviation Administration.
“This can happen when an airplane is flying near the top of a cold air mass that is below a layer of warm air, such as during freezing rain ahead of a winter warm front. As the airplane flies through warm, moist air that has been sucked up by the cold, it hits the supercooled water in liquid form and freezes on the leading edge of the airplane.”
