New Jersey Governor Acknowledges Voter Registration Issues

Governor Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey has confirmed that a “software error” in the state’s motor vehicle voter registration system allowed thousands of non-citizens to register. She noted that, starting in 2023, about 400 of these individuals ended up voting illegally in state elections.

This revelation comes shortly after President Trump addressed concerns about election fraud in a national speech. Sherrill took to social media to provide a detailed clarification on the matter, criticizing the state’s Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) for permitting 6,600 immigrants to register as voters despite selecting “no” to citizenship questions.

Having just taken office in January, Sherrill pointed fingers at her predecessor, Phil Murphy, for the failure of the MVC system. “This was an issue from the previous administration. Once I got wind of this, I instructed my chief advisor to start an investigation,” she stated. “I’ve also directed that those incorrectly added to the voter rolls from June 2023 to June 2024 be removed. A new MVC administrator I appointed has begun the process of replacing the vendor in charge of this system.”

However, it’s not entirely clear how many people might have, let’s say, misrepresented their citizenship status. Sherrill indicated that the 400 non-citizens who voted are registered across multiple parties, which, she suggested, is concerning.

She expressed her discontent over this situation, saying she was “appalled by the reckless failure” that allowed illegal voting to occur. Although she asserted that this lapse did not happen on her watch, she made it clear that she feels accountable now.

Sherrill also took a moment to address Trump directly, claiming, “I can assure you we will safeguard our elections, despite his attempts to manipulate the situation for political advantage.” She dismissed Trump’s credibility regarding election integrity, accusing him of sowing doubt about legitimate election outcomes over the years.

Wrapping up her statement, Sherrill emphasized that New Jersey residents should be confident in their voting rights, asserting that all eligible citizens will have the opportunity to vote and that their legal votes will be counted appropriately.

Following her social media announcements, Sherrill held a press conference to further discuss the issue. This all unfolded just a few days after Trump pointed to a significant number of non-citizens registered in New Jersey and other critical states, highlighting a total of 250,000 across New Jersey, California, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.

As for what’s next, Sherrill has committed to addressing the “mistake” and determining accountability, particularly for MVC Chief Administrator LaTrecia Littles-Floyd, who was appointed by Murphy. It’s still uncertain if Sherrill plans to make any changes to the MVC leadership.
