NJ teacher avoids jail time after having sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student, given lifetime parole

A former New Jersey teacher avoided prison time after admitting to having a sexual relationship with a then-17-year-old girl over several months in 2017 and 2018. The student was reportedly part of a drama club supervised by the teacher.to daily mail.

Christine Knudsen, 46, was sentenced to three years’ probation for inappropriate relationships. She was also told by a New Jersey judge that she would be on parole for the rest of her life.

As part of his punishment, the former Fair Lawn High School teacher was also told he would have to register as a sex offender and would be prohibited from having any contact with the victim, according to reports. The only way she would have to serve time in prison is if she violates the conditions set.

“You are sentenced to a suspended sentence of three years in the New Jersey State Penitentiary,” state Superior Court Judge Nina Remson said.

“He will also be subject to Megan’s Law registration requirements and sentenced to lifetime parole supervision,” Remson added.

“We will give you documentation that tells you where to report for parole,” the judge continued. “I will also be enforcing a Nicol’s Law restraining order. You will receive a copy of it shortly.”

Knudsen wore a mask in court and was seen snorting as the judge explained the terms of his punishment.new york post report Although the relationship was technically legal because the student was of the age of consent, the student was considered a child for purposes of sentencing, the court said.

“You must have no contact with the victim. His initials are NK. Of course you know who it is,” the judge continued.

“You will be barred from her residence, school, and workplace. [and] You are prohibited from having any oral, written, personal, telephone, electronic, or any other form of contact with her. ”

Letters from former students say Knudsen taught for 20 years and generally had a positive impact on the classroom. But Assistant Prosecutor Steven Bollenbach said her relationship with her student was still a violation.

“So while this is certainly not a victimless crime, it’s by no means victimless, but I hope that Mr. Knudsen is forever deterred,” Bollenbach said. “I think it’s in the best interest of the entire community and certainly the students as well.”
