No. 25 UNC Wins Against No. 19 Kansas Following Intense Comeback in the Second Half

North Carolina Tar Heels Defeat Kansas Jayhawks

The North Carolina Tar Heels were heading toward what looked like another disappointing defeat against the Kansas Jayhawks. After a lackluster first half filled with turnovers and a sluggish offense, they found themselves trailing.

However, whether it was the game on Friday night or Hubert Davis’ lineup changes after a close miss at the NCAA Tournament last year, the team came alive in the second half, turning the tide dramatically.

In the end, the 25th-ranked Tar Heels secured a victory, beating the 19th-ranked Jayhawks 87-74. The win was propelled by the contributions of standout players, including some transfer portal additions and senior members stepping up defensively against Kansas’ stars.

North Carolina started the game poorly, finding themselves down by 10 points in the first half. However, they rallied to lead 37-29 at halftime, shooting an impressive 66.7% in the second half. They scored a staggering 58 points during that period against Kansas.

Seth Trimble, who finished with 17 points, highlighted the difference made by this win, suggesting that it relieved some of the early season pressure for Davis and boosted the entire team’s confidence moving forward.

Significant Shifts

Up to that point, this was the kind of game that often eluded the Tar Heels. Last season, they lost eight of nine matchups against AP Top 25 teams, including a tight game against Kansas in which they almost overcame a 20-point deficit.

This victory over Kansas marked the first time since November 2002 that UNC triumphed against them, breaking a long-standing streak. The Jayhawks had won five consecutive games against North Carolina, along with a total of 10 NCAA titles, with deep-rooted connections to legendary coaches and players associated with both schools.

Hubert Davis expressed his desire for the new team to understand what it means to compete in such an environment, wanting them to experience the atmosphere at the Smith Center.

Highlight Performances

Caleb Wilson had a remarkable game, tallying 24 points, seven rebounds, and four steals, showing impressive versatility. His energy throughout the match was noteworthy as he dove for loose balls, ensuring he left a lasting impression.

Henri Vissard, a transfer from Arizona, made significant contributions as well, scoring 20 points and igniting UNC’s second-half momentum with some key dunks. Trimble, initially quiet in the first half, became a significant factor as UNC took control of the game’s tempo.

Trimble’s defensive effort against Darrin Peterson, who scored 22 points, was particularly emphasized by both coaches. Davis appreciated how Trimble adapted to the team’s defensive adjustments, showing resilience throughout the game.

Post-game, Davis maintained a relaxed appearance, having traded his typical sideline suit for athletic gear, celebrating a hard-fought victory with his team and savoring their joy in the locker room.

“I don’t recall the final score, but I can vividly remember their excitement,” he noted. “Their smiles were unforgettable.”
