No Barbies, please: SAG-AFTRA encourages ‘generalized characters’ for striking actors’ Halloween costumes

Hollywood actors are expected to dress up as ghouls, ghosts and other “generalized characters” this Halloween after SAG-AFTRA released guidelines for “strike-friendly” costumes.

The Halloween “Tips and Tricks” released this week by SAG-AFTRA, the union that represents many Hollywood actors, comes as the group’s movie studio strike continues into its third month.

The union, which has more than 160,000 members, has been on strike since July to demand higher wages and better compensation for streaming production.

The guild encouraged its members to “choose costumes inspired by common characters and people,” such as “ghosts, zombies, and spiders.”

The union said costumes inspired by blockbuster movies, such as Barbie and Oppenheimer costumes, are prohibited, and “posting photos of costumes inspired by the content being struck on social media” Please don’t do that.”

Instead, SAG-AFTRA suggested that Halloween revelers participating in the strike “dress up as characters from non-strike content, such as animated television shows.”

“Let’s use our collective power to send a loud and clear message to struck employers that we will not promote their content without a fair contract!” one group said in a post on its website.
