Spanish authorities are looking into the tragic death of a 20-year-old University of Alabama student, who went missing during a spring break trip to Barcelona. Currently, no criminal charges have been filed as they await the results of toxicology tests following a preliminary autopsy.
James “Jimmy” Gracie disappeared early Tuesday after enjoying a night out at the vibrant Shoko nightclub. By Thursday, his body was discovered in nearby waters, just 500 feet from where he was last seen.
Local police indicated that the autopsy suggested Gracie’s death was likely accidental, with no evidence of trauma before he went missing.
A spokesperson from Catalonia’s Mossos d’Esquadra police stated that while they can’t disclose specific details of the incident, the evidence hints strongly at an accidental death.
Because of the investigation findings so far, there are no charges against anyone related to Gracie’s death, according to the High Court of Catalonia. Nonetheless, the investigation will persist until they receive a complete report and toxicology analysis, which may take up to three weeks.
The final findings could clarify whether Gracie was drugged or poisoned before entering the water, but at this point, authorities do not believe foul play was involved. Interestingly, Gracie’s wallet was found intact, containing cash and cards, which suggests he may not have been targeted.
Reports indicate that video footage captured Gracie walking alone towards the Port Olympic pier before he fell into the water. It’s a little unsettling to think about; he was in a crowded area, and then just… gone.
Gracie, who attended the University of Alabama, was in Barcelona with friends from his fraternity. They had partied at Shoko on March 16. The last image of him shows him in a white T-shirt with a gold chain featuring a rhinestone cross, a detail that perhaps humanizes the tragedy a bit.
Friends say they were concerned when they realized he hadn’t returned to their Airbnb the next morning. After some search efforts, police found Gracie’s cell phone, but the individual they arrested in connection with that was determined not to be involved in his disappearance, resulting in charges for something unrelated.
A memorial Mass was held at Holy Family Church in Chicago to remember Gracie, where loved ones gathered, reflecting on a life that’s now cut short.
