Heads of state usually play a rather passive role at the Olympics: they pop up now and then, shake hands, pose for photos and then leave without much fuss, perhaps only to be seen laughing with their peers in a friendly, semi-competitive manner.
And then there’s the Dutch royal family: King Willem-Alexander, his wife Queen Máxima and the rest of the royal family didn’t travel to Paris to sit quietly in the audience.
No, they’re invested in the game, and when we say invested, we mean it.

And here they are, consoling cyclist Puck Peters after a flat tire late in the race cost him his medal in the mountain bike race.
As of Monday, the Netherlands has yet to win a medal at this year’s Olympics. Pieters came the closest before breaking the rear wheel of his bike. Dutch athletes will eventually make the podium, but road and track cycling, rowing and sailing are the best bets.
But for now, the Netherlands will have to take solace in the fact that the Royals put in a performance worthy of a gold medal.
The only thing we don’t know is whether they liked the opening ceremony, which featured decapitated aristocrats singing French Revolution songs set to metal music.
