Noah Lyles is the fastest man in the world.
And it took him just 9.79 seconds to do it, with a photo-finish moment just before the finish line.
And it would return the United States to the top of the world sprinting stage for the first time in decades.
Lyles continued his momentum, storming from the back to move from fourth to first place on Sunday night at the Stade de France.
2024 Paris Olympics
He became the first American man to win an Olympic gold medal in the 100m since Justin Gatlin 20 years ago, and ran into the stands to embrace his mother, Keisha Kane Bishop, a Seton Hall University alumna.
Americans Lyles, Kenny Bednarek and Fred Curley all reached the finals.
And Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson finished in 9.77, the fastest time in the world this year, and backed it up with a best time of 9.80 in the heats. And as always, the powerful Jamaican started brilliantly.
However, Thompson had never competed in an Olympic or World Championship final.
And Lyles finished better, winning by just five thousandths of a second. Curley, who won silver in Tokyo, took the bronze medal.
Lyles is scheduled to compete in her best events, the 200 meters and the 4×100 meters.
