Nobel Foundation denies transfer of Maria Corina Machado's Peace Prize to Trump

Nobel Foundation Responds to Peace Prize Awarded to Trump

The Nobel Foundation issued a statement on Sunday regarding the controversial awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize by Venezuela’s opposition leader to President Donald Trump. Maria Colina Machado had presented the prize to Trump during a recent meeting at the White House.

In its statement, the Foundation reiterated the importance of adhering to the original intent of the Nobel Prizes, emphasizing that they are meant for those who have significantly benefited humanity. The statement clarified that the award cannot be transferred or shared, even symbolically.

Machado, speaking to Fox News, explained her reasoning for the unusual gesture. She expressed that Trump “deserves it,” reflecting on a pretty emotional moment for her. She indicated that her decision was on behalf of the Venezuelan people and highlighted Trump’s role in their struggle against dictator Nicolás Maduro.

Interestingly, Machado has positioned herself as a long-standing critic of Maduro and has supported Trump’s actions against him, even implying that she holds some shared credit for Maduro’s downfall. She expressed gratitude for Trump’s influence, citing his contributions to both Venezuelan freedom and broader regional liberation.

Trump appeared pleased with the gesture. In a post on Truth Social, he mentioned his honor in meeting Machado and receiving the symbolic award, regarding it as an act of mutual respect.

Amid this, the Norwegian Nobel Institute had previously sought to prevent the award transfer, asserting that once a Nobel Prize is announced, it cannot be revoked or shared with anyone else. Their statement reinforced that this ruling is definitive.
