The Tar Heels are dancing, but they not only got shocked by the news, but they thought maybe there was some kind of favor involved.
North Carolina was predicted to be in a bubble at best to create an NCAA tournament, but ahead of several teams fans believed were more appropriate, Tar Heels was chosen to compete in the insanity of March.
To add to this issue, the tournament selection committee chaired by North Carolina athletic director Baba Cunningham, who created more outrage among university hoop fans.
“It's a good debate whether North Carolina should come in. Their ads are chair of the selection committee, but they can't be in the room when Tar Heel is being discussed.” Tweeted by ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla. “But when the other members of the committee spend a lot of time with him, it's human nature that doesn't hurt UNC's chances. Rather than criticize it, we just point it out.”
Cunningham pointed out how he will benefit from the tar heels making tournaments and more in the long run.
Cunningham's contract requires North Carolina to receive a monthly (8.33%) bonus of annual salary if they create a tournament. Carolina interior.
That totals $67,905.67.
It also includes the biggest bonus for the national title tar heel at $100,000, but he reportedly reaches $75,000 for the final four runs and $50,000 for a sweet 16 bid.
Former Indiana coach Dan Dakic opposed the financial side, citing financial figures that seemingly combine with Cunngingham's salary. Long-standing incentive compensation.
“This is simply a ridiculous conflict. BubbaCunningham has over $104,000 for UNC to create an NCAA tournament and he is head of the Select Committee!!!” He posted.
Cunningham Factor adds already controversial picks based solely on resumes.
The Tar Heels went 22-13, but recorded only one victory over their Quad 1 opponent.
They entered the selection on Sunday with 36 net rankings and had strong schedules at 33rd and 42nd in Kenpom.
“All we hear is talking about the importance of Quad 1 Wins. UNC was 1-12 in the Coad1 tough game. @unc_basketball passes my eye test, but I don't want to hear the committee talk about the key Quad 1 victory. Obviously, for all the teams, I feel that @wvuhoops has made a raw deal.” Legendary college basketball analyst Dick Vitale commented on the X.
“The UNC athletic director is the chairman of the Select Committee. The Tar Heels are talented, and as a result, West Virginia gets screwed. It's fun.” Another commented on social media.
“I'm sorry, but does North Carolina have it in? Their ads are the chair of the selection committee…. That's wrong.” A third party commented.
“North Carolina is awful to be in the tournament. Sorry.” Another user rang.
In an interview with the NCAA Tournament Selection Show on CBS broadcasts, Cunningham and the vice-chairman of the Selection Committee Keith Gill said the North Carolina ads are not part of the conversation about the tar heels that make the tournament.
“As Vice-Chairman, I managed all the conversations about North Carolina, and there were quite a few,” Gill said. “Our policy requires school ads to reject themselves and actually leave the room for those discussions. And they are not allowed to take part in the vote either.”
Gill also revealed in his interview that North Carolina did not let Memphis dance big even after losing the AAC Championship game.
The 11th seeded Tar Heels will face their colleagues, No. 11 seeded San Diego State in their first four matches on Tuesday at 9:10pm.
“On Saturday night we had our final vote. On Saturday night we voted for four teams on the field, and we voted for an emergency. An accidental vote – that was the last team on the field. And it was based on Memphis and UAB,” he said. “If Memphis won that game, it was going to unlock the tournament spot, and it became North Carolina. If UAB won, Memphis would have been in the tournament, UAB would have been in the tournament, and North Carolina would have been in the tournament.”
