Challenges Increase for Bill Belichick at North Carolina
It seems like things are getting tougher for Bill Belichick and the North Carolina football team.
Cornerbacks coach Armond Hawkins has been suspended due to allegations of extra payments during games, as reported by WRAL. The specific concern relates to a sideline pass that was given to a player’s family, which may have violated NCAA rules.
Hawkins, who joined the UNC coaching staff this year, previously worked with Belichick’s son, Steve, at the University of Washington.
A critical report from WRAL highlighted complaints from parents of players, suggesting that the six-time Super Bowl champion has created a “toxic environment” at Chapel Hill.
Insiders linked the team’s shaky 2-3 start to a “divisive locker room” atmosphere. This division reportedly stems from players recruited by former coach Mack Brown and those brought in by Belichick, compounded by a staff that has been characterized as “disorganized” with poor communication.
A source mentioned to WRAL, “It started with recruits having certain rights to act. It wasn’t about the team, it was about them as individuals.” This sentiment captures a growing frustration with the overall team dynamic.
One parent voiced concerns about the lack of communication from the coaching staff, stating, “There was no communication with coaches or parents. Nothing, zero. Not one email, not one text message, not one phone call from my coach.”
North Carolina has managed to secure wins against less competitive teams like Charlotte and Richmond, yet has faced significant defeats—totaling 120-35 against TCU, UCF, and most recently, Clemson.
This isn’t the promising start Belichick, now 73, or the university had in mind when he took on the role, which comes with a hefty $10 million salary. Additionally, much of the media attention has been diverted to his relationship with his 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson.
Recently, the program decided to cancel a documentary series intended to showcase Belichick’s inaugural season as a college head coach.
