North Carolina Lawmaker Resigns Amid Misconduct Investigation
A North Carolina legislator has stepped down following the announcement of a committee looking into sexual misconduct allegations involving a 15-year-old boy, according to officials.
Rep. Cecil Brockman, a Democrat from Guilford, submitted his resignation letter to the House Clerk’s Office on Friday. This decision came after increasing pressure from leaders across the political spectrum, notably including Democratic Governor Josh Stein.
Brockman, who was arrested on October 8, faces two counts of statutory sex offense against a minor and one count of indecent assault, as indicated by court documents obtained by The Post.
The 41-year-old, who has served in the House since 2015, acknowledged in his letter that, due to the serious nature of the charges, he must focus on his legal defense. He expressed that this situation has rendered him unable to adequately serve his constituents.
Brockman mentioned that Democratic officials in his district will now be responsible for selecting a replacement to serve a full two-year term until the end of 2026.
In response to the allegations, Republican House Speaker Destin Hall announced plans to form a bipartisan committee tasked with investigating the charges and recommending potential removal from the House if deemed necessary.
During his time in office, Brockman reportedly met the minor through an online app. There have been claims from Guilford County District Attorney Avery Crump that he attempted to track the boy using another app and subsequently called emergency services.
Since his arraignment, Brockman has been held in jail on a $1.05 million bail and has been ordered not to have any contact with the victim.
Hall stated that Brockman’s resignation brings an end to what has been a challenging and distressing situation for the House of Representatives.
A court hearing to reassess Brockman’s bail is scheduled for Monday.
