North Carolina GOP senators divided on federal action regarding Charlotte murder

Senator Tom Tillis from North Carolina raised concerns about the implications if the White House chooses to focus on a recent incident related to crime and democratic policies. This comes as Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska was tragically killed last month while using public transport in Charlotte, North Carolina. The accused, DeCarlos Brown Jr., had a long history with the law, having been arrested 14 times prior to this murder charge.

As details circulated about the incident, spurred by a harrowing video of the event, criticism has emerged regarding the criminal justice policies in cities like Charlotte led by Democratic officials.

Zarutska suffered fatal stab wounds to her throat during what police labeled a random attack on August 22, 2025. Following this, former President Donald Trump remarked that “blood is in the hands of Democrats who refuse to put bad people in prison.” Attorney General Pam Bondy echoed this sentiment, stating that the murder reflected a “soft crime policy” that prioritizes offenders over innocent citizens.

This discussion coincides with the Trump administration’s messaging around increased federal oversight in cities governed by Democrats. They’ve already dispatched federal agencies to places like Washington, D.C., with intentions for similar moves in Memphis and even Baltimore.

In a surprising turn, despite the uproar around the fatal incident, the mayor of Charlotte secured a significant reelection victory.

Tillis shared that Charlotte isn’t the only city facing challenges, indicating that there are several locations that require attention. He expressed a cautious stance, arguing against national police intervention, which he believes may merely conceal the failures of city leadership. He noted the importance of addressing local issues but believes that state intervention isn’t the solution.

Trump maintained his claim that Democrats carry responsibility for the violence in Charlotte following Zarutska’s death. Meanwhile, Senator Ted Budd offered a perspective that highlighted the failures of local policies under former Governor Roy Cooper and current Governor Josh Stein. He stated the need for local governments to tackle crime without reliance on federal resources and criticized what he termed ‘left-wing cashless bail’ policies.

In his view, the local government’s negligence contributed to the environment that led to such tragedies. Budd believes that without proper action at the city level, federal intervention may become necessary, as seen in places like Chicago and Washington, D.C.

Attempts to reach out to Governor Stein’s office for comments went unanswered.
