North Carolina gov cross-checks Devils after loss to Hurricanes: ‘Too good for such dirty play’

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper took a shot at the New Jersey Devils on Saturday after their 5-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Cooper, a Hurricanes fan, wrote in a social media post that he was happy to see his favorite team finish out the remainder of the regular season with the Devils.

“Happy to see our @Canes finish the regular season against the @NJDevils,” the Democratic governor wrote to X. “We got a great win tonight despite enduring some bad hitting. The Devils are too good for that kind of dirty play.”

The Devils were given five penalties in the 21-minute loss. The Hurricanes were given four penalties in eight minutes. Both teams gave up 41 hits against each other.

The game entered the third period with the score tied. Ondrej Palat scored early in the third period off assists from Jesper Bratt and Dougie Hamilton. Carolina answered immediately.

Sebastian Aho scored the equalizer seconds later. Jackson Blake then scored the winning goal. Jack Roslovic scored twice following the break to keep the Devils within a narrow lead.

New Jersey had defeated Carolina 4-2 on Friday night.

Both teams are the top teams in the Eastern Conference and could clash in the conference finals next spring.

The Devils lead the Metropolitan Division with a record of 24 wins, 12 losses, and 51 points. Carolina is in third place in the division with a record of 22 wins, 13 losses, and 1 draw (45 points).
