Mother Missing for Over Two Decades Found Alive

A North Carolina mother of three, who vanished more than 20 years ago, has been discovered alive. This revelation has left her family both relieved and distressed, according to authorities and various news outlets.

Michelle Lynn Handley Smith, who was 38 at the time, went missing in December 2001. She left her home in Eden, Virginia, for some Christmas shopping at Kmart. Reports indicate that her disappearance prompted a significant search effort by multiple agencies, including the FBI, which dedicated countless hours to following leads regarding her alarming disappearance.

At the time, missing person flyers warned that Smith was “at risk” and mentioned that she would never voluntarily abandon her children.

Fast forward nearly 24 years, and on a recent Friday, officials announced that Smith had been located “alive and well” at an undisclosed location in North Carolina after a police officer received a call regarding her situation.

Her family has been informed of her whereabouts, although exact details remain private.

“I feel like I want to go outside and scream, ‘She’s alive, she’s alive,’” expressed Smith’s cousin, Barbara Byrd. She added, “My biggest question for her is… what happened all those years ago in December? What made you leave? What happened?”

Some family members remain mixed in their emotions. One of Smith’s shocked children shared their feelings on Facebook: “As for my opinions towards my mother… I am ecstatic, disappointed, and heartbroken. I’m on the other side of the map! Will I ever have a relationship with my mother again?” They continued, expressing the difficulty in answering that question, caught between joy and hurt.

“When my mother was a part of my daily life, she showed me a love and bond that I will never forget,” they wrote, recalling both joyful moments and challenging times. The motive behind Smith’s long absence is still unclear.
