North Carolina Mother Resurfaces After 20 Years
A North Carolina mother of three, who vanished over two decades ago, revealed to authorities that she left her family due to ongoing domestic issues.
Michelle Lynn Handley-Smith, who was 38 at the time, disappeared in December 2001 after telling her family she was going Christmas shopping at Kmart. Reports indicate she left her home in Eden, Virginia, under that pretense. Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page confirmed that there were no suspicions of foul play related to her departure.
“She mentioned that she had left because of domestic issues at the time,” Page explained, although he did not provide specifics about the situation. Interestingly, the sheriff’s office had no official records of any prior domestic incidents involving her.
In the wake of Smith’s alarming disappearance, numerous agencies, including the FBI, dedicated significant resources to search for her, following various leads. During that time, missing person flyers indicated she was “at risk” and would not have left her children willingly.
Recently, Smith was located “alive and well” at an undisclosed location in North Carolina, after a police officer made contact with her. Her family has since been informed that she was found.
One of her children expressed a mix of emotions in a statement posted on a Facebook page aimed at finding her mother. “The last few days… have been a whirlwind of emotions,” the child shared. They conveyed feelings of elation yet heartache, emphasizing that while they yearned for a relationship with their mother, uncertainties remained. “Honestly, I can’t answer that because I don’t know,” they reflected, acknowledging past pain but also recalling the love and bond they once shared.
