“He suffered multiple skull fractures and bleeding from the brain,” said Kristen Phillips.
The mother of three is currently in the hospital dealing with serious brain injuries after being attacked with a baseball bat while making a DoorDash delivery.
Stanley Shockley, 44, is incarcerated following the incident.
The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office reported that the attack happened in broad daylight when Shockley cornered Phillips and struck her with a bat as she exited her vehicle to drop off the food.
The situation unfolded on August 1 in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Phillips had stopped at an intersection, waiting for the car in front to move when Shockley, who was driving behind her, reportedly reacted after she honked her horn.
Things escalated quickly after the honking.
“The vehicle moved out of her way and began pursuing her,” noted the sheriff’s office.
After completing her delivery, as Phillips was heading back to her car, Shockley allegedly jumped out and hit her with the bat before fleeing the scene.
“He came to my door with a small wooden baseball bat or nightstick and hit me in the head and face with it,” Phillips recounted in a social media post.
She stated, “I don’t remember anything at all. I woke up too late to be sure.”
Following the attack, she managed to drive herself to a nearby hospital.
Her injuries included multiple skull fractures, brain bleeding, and fluid draining from her left ear for hours. There’s also a fractured cheekbone on her left side.
The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Shockley was arrested on Monday related to the assault.
He faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury with intent to murder, according to court records.
Sheriff Chris Thomas commented, “We understand that the public may not grasp the nature of all investigations and that incidents like this can unsettle the community. We appreciate the numerous tips and leads we’ve received.”
“Our detectives follow every lead, meticulously examine evidence, and continue their pursuit of answers, even when the investigation proves challenging. Their diligent work ultimately led to the identification and arrest of the suspect.”
A DoorDash spokesperson expressed, “What this dasher went through was horrific, and we’re relieved she is safe and on the road to recovery. We appreciate the efforts of law enforcement in making this arrest and will continue to support the investigation in any way we can.”
