Three Arrested for Alleged Kidnapping in North Carolina
Federal authorities have apprehended three individuals suspected of luring a mother and her 13-month-old child from their home in Garner, North Carolina, on April 28. The arrested suspects include Eleodro “Leo” Estrada Hernandez, 37, and siblings Paola Duran Duran, 25, and Miguel Angel Duran Duran, 23. Each faces two counts of first-degree kidnapping and one count of second-degree kidnapping. Estrada Hernandez also faces charges related to illegal firearm possession and assault involving a firearm.
North Carolina FBI agent Robert M. DeWitt stated that resources were mobilized swiftly in response to the Garner Police Department’s request for assistance. He emphasized the collaborative efforts of local and state partners in addressing this complex case, which allowed for the safe recovery of the victims.
According to court records, the family noticed a suspicious black Nissan Ultima multiple times after returning home one evening. The situation escalated when the suspects knocked on their door, claiming they were looking for a woman named Maria. As the door opened, Miguel and Hernandez allegedly forced their way inside while wearing ski masks.
Documents from the Justice Department describe how the husband was overpowered and restrained as the suspects covered his eyes and mouth. Ultimately, the pair forcefully removed the mother and her child from the house and into the waiting vehicle.
The ordeal took a troubling turn as the suspects reportedly took the victims to a nearby trailer. Once there, Miguel even held the mother’s baby while they attempted to destroy evidence linked to the kidnapping.
After conducting a few maneuvers, including dropping off Paola at a friend’s house, the suspects eventually parted ways. The victim was able to escape and seek help from a nearby resident, who promptly called 911.
Authorities believe Estrada Hernandez orchestrated the whole plan, providing significant financial support to Paola and Miguel over several months to execute it. U.S. Attorney Daniel P. Bubar praised the quick responses of law enforcement agencies in addressing such serious allegations and highlighted their commitment to prosecuting violent crimes. If convicted, the suspects could face substantial prison sentences.
