GOP Leaders Critique Democratic Policies After Murder of Ukrainian Refugee
On Wednesday, a North Carolina Republican criticized Democrats for what he termed a “criminal soft” policy that contributed to the death of Irina Zaltoska, a Ukrainian refugee who was murdered in Charlotte.
During a press conference attended by statewide GOP leaders, Kyle Kirby, chairman of the Mecklenburg County GOP, urged the public not to ignore the footage of Zaltoska’s murder. He emphatically called for people to confront the reality of the tragedy. “Look at it,” he said. “Her final moments were filled with fear, pain, and loneliness. It’s heartbreaking that no one reached out to help her as the killer remained indifferent.”
Kirby pointed out that Zaltoska had fled the war in Ukraine, seeking refuge in Charlotte. He expressed frustration at the judicial system, stating, “What Democrats call restorative justice resulted in Irina’s murder. We can’t allow this kind of suffering, which only serves to endanger the lives of our loved ones.” He criticized local leaders for not dealing harshly enough with repeat offenders, specifically referencing an individual with 14 prior arrests.
Zaltoska was killed while in transit on a light rail in Charlotte. Kirby has encouraged the community to gather for a candlelight vigil marking a month since her death, highlighting the consequences of complacency within city and county governments.
Kirby’s concerns echo sentiments expressed by national politicians, including President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who criticize Democratic policies like no-cash bail for contributing to rising crime rates.
Vice President Vance pointed fingers at North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, who had previously criticized the GOP for leveraging Zaltoska’s murder for political gain. Vance responded, emphasizing that law enforcement had repeatedly arrested the suspect but that political weakness had allowed him to evade incarceration.
In a separate but related call, Trump urged that the suspect, Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr.—who is accused of the stabbing—should face the death penalty, stating in a post, “The animal that killed a beautiful young Ukrainian woman seeking peace in America should receive a swift trial and the death penalty. There isn’t another option!”
